Legacy Chronicles: SENTINEL-2224, Chapter 4

Univa, Soteros System, Milky Way Galaxy
12 February, AD 2849, 1213 hours

The bad news: New Berlin had been destroyed. Slagged completely. The good news: its civilians had been evacuated.

"Univa Beta Station, this is Remus Scanning Outpost. Reports of a holospace rupture in-system."

"What! That's impossible! Where did you get the information?"

"Reports confirmed. It's them. Oh goodness! It's the Vengeance Fleet! All 424 ships of the Vengeance Fleet!"

The Vengeance Fleet was one of the largest fleets in the Agedai Empire and one of the most powerful. Now, they had only one mission: destroy Univa.

Back at the UWSA headquarters on Earth, General Ross learned of this bad news.

"We have no choice," he sighed,"Issue Erectus Transmission-145689SA! All UWSA ships are to head to the rendezvous point in the Soteros System! Univa must not be allowed to fall!"

The Battle Above Univa was one of the biggest spaceship confrontations between the UWSA and the Agedai. Although the UWSA won the first few skirmishes, the Agedai ultimately relied on their sheer firepower and numbers to overwhelm the UWSA defences. The UWSA fleet lost many ships and was forced to retreat.

Within a few days, the orbital defense grid was destroyed. The Agedai fleet was now free to attack Univa directly.

Squad Bravo Three was sent to a secret OPAS Base for their next mission briefing.

Stepping through the thick doors of the command center, Conrad saw the person who started his career as a supersoldier. The person who was a mother figure to the Sentinel-IIIs. The person who considered him her favorite Sentinel. Doctor Anne Holloway.

"Hey there, Conrad. It's been a long time," Holloway smiled, her greying hair sparkled in the light.

  "Yes indeed, mam," Conrad saluted.

"There's no need for that, Conrad. You know, your formality has always amused me. We've known each other for a very long time. Why don't we skip that next time? Anyway, do you know why you are here?"

  "A mission, mam?" Conrad asked.

"Yes. You've got that right, Conrad. However, I'm not the one assigning the mission. Admiral Dochenko here will be the one doing it."

Saluting the men of Squad Bravo Three, Dochenko stepped forward. Conrad and his men returned with salutes of their own.

"Thank you, Doctor Holloway. Yes, men. You are going to be given a mission. That mission: find and eliminate a traitor," Dochenko stated.

"A traitor?" Shaun-129 raised his eyebrows.

"Yes. Do you know how the secret location of this planet was compromised?"

The Sentinels glanced at each other.

"Okay," Dochenko walked over to a computer monitor. "Look here."

Squad Bravo Three followed Dochenko and walked over to look at the screen.

"We intercepted a coded transmission from this planet to the Agedai ship, Reign of Justice. That transmission provided almost all the details needed for the Agedai to successfully invade this planet. We traced the transmission to a SENTINEL base approximately 200 kilometers from here. We want you, Squad Bravo Three, to go and investigate. If the traitor is there, I want you to bring him back alive. I don't want any more information to be leaked to the Agedai." Dochenko turned from the screen and faced the men.

  "Yes sir!'

2 kilometers from SENTINEL base, Univa, Soteros System
12 February, AD 2849, 0012 hours

Ten ATSVs (All-Terrain Scout Vehicles) ground to a halt. Stepping out, Conrad briefed the men of the plan.

"Team Helos, guard the ATSVs. Team Ioda, I want you to surround the base. Make sure no one leaves. Team Radon, follow me. We're going in. Act casual. I will take care of all questions."

When Team Radon had reached the entrance of the base, a group of guards stopped them.

"This is a classified base. No one without authorization is allowed in."

"I am Conrad-S2224, Sentinel-III and Master Specialist Warrant Commanding Officer. As Sentinels, we have the right to access any SENTINEL base." Conrad took off his helmet and saluted, trying to get the guards to recognize him.

"I'm sorry sir, we didn't recognize you. Of course, please proceed." The head guard apologized and saluted back.

Entering the base, Team Radon proceeded to the transmissions center. Leaving Dave-A2355 and Vince-G892 outside to guard the door, Conrad, Hector-345, Johan-293 and Leon-W1289 started searching for any data that might give a clue.

"Sir! I have found the transmission! Somehow that idiot forgot to delete it from the records!" Johan-293, a SENTINEL-IV, shouted out in triumph.

"Great! Run it now." Conrad grinned. This was a great clue. If the voice of the traitor could be identified, the mission would be much easier.

Initiating the voice-recognition function on the computer, Conrad ran the transmission.

"Recognition process successful. Voice identified as that of Isaac-Z667." The words flashed across the screen.

Conrad was taken aback. Isaac-Z667 was a major one of the legendary soldiers of the UWSA. A SENTINEL-II soldier, he was one of the most experienced soldiers and was renowned for his combat prowess. He had killed thousands of Agedai throughout his 48-year military career and was more feared than Conrad himself. Most of all, he was Conrad's closest mentor and teacher.

"Isaac? It can't be!" Conrad gasped.

Suddenly, an event came to his mind. An event that had haunted him for ages. An event that had occurred ten years earlier...

...

Conrad had been doing his routine exercises at the SENTINEL barracks located near the city of Augolis, Univa. Suddenly, Isaac burst into the barracks.

"Where have you been, Isaac?" Conrad asked, noticing blood on Isaac's armor.

"Killing Agedai, as usual, Conrad." Isaac smiled as he hurriedly rushed in the direction of the bathrooms.

"Haha! You must have enjoyed it." Conrad yelled as Isaac disappeared round the corner.

The next day, Conrad received news that Sentinel Squad Unity had been mercilessly massacred near the barracks itself. Camera footage had captured an unknown figure slaughtering each of the Sentinels with deadly efficiency. It didn't look like an Agedai. It looked strangely human.

Upon hearing the news, Conrad was devastated. The men of Squad Unity had been his close friends since the start of the SENTINEL-III program.

Investigations ensued, but the mysterious killer left little behind. The only thing they could find was an unknown badge. In the end, the investigations were stopped due to the more dangerous threat of the Agedai. However, similar killings of Sentinel-III squads continued, with no one bothering to find the killer. This greatly frustrated Conrad as he saw many of his close friends getting killed by an unknown foe.

...

As he replayed those fateful events, realization hit Conrad. The blood on Isaac's armor was not blue Agedai blood. It was red. Red human blood. Blood that came from the men of Squad Unity. Then the badge... it looked familiar...

Rushing over to the computer, Conrad ran a search on that particular badge. When the image came up, Conrad's eyes widened. That badge was Isaac's!

Conrad turned from the computer cursing and swearing. Why had he not noticed this earlier? But how could Isaac betray humanity? Isaac was the man who always focused on teaching loyalty. Conrad would get to the bottom of this.

Back at the OPAS base, Conrad related the news of the traitor to Dochenko.

"Isaac?! Are you sure, Master Specialist?" Dochenko's puzzled look said it all.

"Affirmative, sir. We ran a voice-recognition check and searched records. Apparently, he somehow forgot to delete that file. I suspect that this is more complicated than I thought. Isaac was not the careless sort." Conrad furrowed his eyebrows.

"Hmmm... Yes. I sense more behind-the-scenes workings. Nevertheless, you must find Isaac and piece the whole thing together. We will work on the defenses of Univa. The Battle of Auslon is now underway."

"Yes sir. We will get to the bottom of this." Conrad saluted and left the room.

Turning away to walk back to his office, Dochenko was still thinking through the whole thing. Isaac should not have made it this easy for Squad Bravo Three to track him. Something was amiss somewhere. They had to be on the lookout. But Isaac? How?

Throughout the rest of the day, one question repeatedly rang in Dochenko's head.

  How...?

Legacy Chronicles: SENTINEL-2224, Chapter 3

Univa, Soteros System, Milky Way Galaxy
6 February, AD 2849, 1323 hours

The Agedai had sent a second and more powerful fleet to Univa. The first one was a mere trifle. Outgunned and outnumbered, the situation was getting bleak for the humans.

Conrad led his squad across the small town of Karvos. The first attack had been repelled, however, the second wave was coming soon.

Taking up positions behind a wall, Squad Bravo Three waited with bated breath for the enemy.

Suddenly, an army of Agedai could be seen swarming over the hills. Reloading their weapons, the human forces took cover behind the broken walls of the town and prepared for the oncoming onslaught.

Just as the first line of Agedai troops came within 500 meters of the trenches, the humans mercilessly opened fire with their fearsome WOR-02 heavy machine guns. Firing at a million rounds per minute, these beasts sure packed a heavy punch!

The bullets slammed into the Agedai, falling many. However, the Agedai had air support. The humans didn't.

Agedai Type-43 Infantry Support Aircraft, known as Hawks, swooped down and wreaked havoc with their plasma cannons. The unfortunate machine gunners were targeted. They did not stand a chance against the Hawks. The tide of the battle was now turning in favor of the Agedai.

As if that was the cue, Squad Bravo Three raised their guns above the wall and unleashed their own barrage of bullets at the Agedai. Similar Sentinel squads did the same from differing positions throughout the area. Some charged the Agedai successfully, sustaining only minor casualties.

Caught off guard by the sudden Sentinel attack, the Agedai were soon overwhelmed by the combined human effort and retreated.

After a few days of fighting between the two opposing sides, the Agedai began slagging a few targeted areas. Slagging was the act of reducing a planet's crust to molten slag. The Agedai had invaded many human-occupied worlds successfully by slagging them.

Univa, Soteros System, Milky Way Galaxy
8 February, AD 2849, 1035 hours

The city of New Berlin was presently under attack and Squad Bravo Three were sent to help in the defense and evacuation process. Agedai forces were trying to storm the city and massacre the entire population. Civilian evacuation aircraft were being shot down like flies

Once their Dastro-2 Helicarriers landed, Squad Bravo Three moved into action. Half of the team, led by second-in-command, Shaun-129, were sent to aid in the defending the escaping civilians.

Conrad and his team were assigned to help the UWSA forces repel the Agedai crack troopers that were sent to kill every human in the city. They hoped to hold off the enemy long enough for all the civilians to evacuate.

When Conrad's team finally caught up with the UWSA soldiers, they were assailed by a team of Agedai crack troopers and Hawks. While the rest of the humans fired back, Conrad slipped away with two Marines, entering a sewer passage that would take them behind the Agedai team.

...

Shaun-129 and his team were engaged in a firefight with some Agedai troopers that had just killed five civilians and wounded ten more. Covering the medical personnel, the UWSA soldiers erected barriers to act as cover.

Shaun picked up an Agedai pulse grenade that had landed next to him and hurled it back. The grenade detonated and blasted a few unfortunate Agedai to bits. Raising his MAR-32, he began systematically killing off those Agedai who were not protected by their cover.

When it became apparent that their current tactic was not working, the Agedai began charging the UWSA soldiers. At this time, the humans rose above their cover too and began firing at the Agedai. The Agedai soldiers' shields were able to hold off at first, but the UWSA forces' firepower soon overwhelmed their shields and the Agedai were forced to retreat back to cover.

...

Conrad and the two Marines had already sneaked up on the Agedai crack team. Conrad's combat made short work of three Agedai while his two companions mowed down the Hawks with gunfire.

No aware of the second threat that had just crept up on them, the Agedai troopers activated their Active Cloak, making them invisible. This was what Conrad had expected, but he underestimated their ability.

Almost immediately, Conrad's two companions were impaled on energy swords. Conrad ducked low, just in time to evade a decapitating blow. Kicking out, Conrad felt the Agedai stumble backwards. Raising his gun in the direction he had kicked the Agedai, Conrad opened fire, killing that Agedai and deactivating his Active Cloak, making the body visible.

Initiating his helmet's infrared HUD display function, Conrad could now detect his enemies. from their heat signatures. By this time, the UWSA soldiers had stopped firing to avoid hitting Conrad.

Now that the Agedai troopers could be seen, the job was made so much easier for Conrad. Dodging another energy sword, Conrad roundhouse-kicked his assailant and ended his life with a short burst of bullets from his TYU-23 assault rifle. Rolling to the side to avoid a plasma bolt, Conrad simultaneously tossed an Instant-Detonate Grenade at the Agedai standing in the middle of the group. The explosion killed three Agedai immediately, leaving the rest severely wounded. The UWSA forces then advanced and put the surviving Agedai soldiers out of their misery. Knocked off his feet by the blast, Conrad took time to recover and was helped onto his feet by the head of the advancing UWSA forces, Commander William Pallus.

With the Agedai team dead, the UWSA forces advanced, moving to meet the new wave of Agedai forces that had swept into the city.

Legacy Chronicles: SENTINEL-2224, Chapter 2

Conrad Kyle Jackson was one of the few SENTINELs born on Earth, capital of the human empire. When he was younger, he was thin, tall, and quite weak in terms of muscle strength. He was frequently bullied in school and his friends even made fun of him. At age 6, both his wealthy parents were murdered by his uncle who greatly coveted his family fortune. Thrown of the house by his evil uncle, he roamed the streets and relied on begging and for a living.

The turning point of his life came when Dr. Anne Holloway, the eminent scientist heading the SENTINEL-III project. The eight-year-old Conrad was one of the 300 candidates selected for the SENTINEL-III. After a interview with every single one of the candidates, Dr. Holloway chose only 100 of the candidates to be trained as the first generation of SENTINEL-III soldiers. Conrad was one of them. In order to erase any trace of their civilian life, the Sentinels' last names were stripped and replaced with numbers. The name Conrad-S2224 was then born.

After going through a rigorous training regime lasting 6 long years, the SENTINEL-III hopefuls were finally sent for the augmentation process. Sadly 20 died due to complications arising during the process and a further 10 were physically disabled. Conrad was one of the 50 Sentinels who went through the process unharmed. Those who were not killed or disabled received immunity to all kinds of diseases and poisons, enhanced vision, superhuman strength, superhuman speed, unbreakable bones, quicker reflexes, and altered their bodies in such a way that it almost stopped the aging process entirely, making the Sentinels almost immortal. However, they still could be killed.

In a test of Sentinel prowess, Conrad was selected to battle five UWSA Marines in a boxing ring. Conrad seriously wounded one, knocked out another, and easily forced the others to admit defeat. Although this caused some resentment of the Sentinels by the Marine Corps, the lethality of the new Sentinels had been established.

Conrad's early military career showed his leadership skills and he soon was promoted to Squad Leader of Bravo Squad Three. He was often looked upon as the de facto leader of the Sentinels and many looked to him for advice. During this time, Conrad became known as "Master Specialist." That was a shortened form of his rank, Master Specialist Warrant Commanding Officer. Only a few called him by his maiden name, "Conrad."

It just so turned out that the people that had made fun of Conrad in the past had joined a rebel cause. Bravo Squad Three was sent to take them out with orders to kill on sight. Although his enemies put up a brave fight, they were eventually overwhelmed by the sheer power of the Sentinels and were captured. Lining them up one by one, Conrad kicked them to their knees and enjoyed their pleas of mercy. Loading his W102 shotgun, Conrad blasted their heads off one by one, face emotionless as he did so. Later, he would admit that he did not feel any satisfaction of getting revenge.

However in a mission to dispatch a team of terrorists holding an important government official hostage, Conrad went MIA (Missing In Action). Reappearing about six months later, Conrad was just in time for a mission to take down the rebel leader. No one knew what happened during his six-month absence. Even so, a change was apparent in Conrad. He was not cold and calculative as before.

The mission progressed smoothly, but when Conrad at last came face-to-face with the rebel leader, he recognized that the rebel was none other than the uncle who mistreated him and stole his family fortune. A battle ensued, pitting Sentinel against rebel. In the end, Conrad defeated his uncle and severely wounded him. However, Conrad overcame his desire for revenge and spared his uncle, arresting him and handing him over to the authorities for trial.

Throughout the rest of his career, Conrad killed many a Agedai, thus earning the fear and respect of the Agedai. They referred to him specifically as "the devil" and didn't dare to face him if they were alone. He built up a lethal reputation and was known to take down  organizations and make entire rebel groups disappear on his own.

Planet Earth, Sol System, Milky Way Galaxy
4 February, AD 2849, 1600 hours

Earth was the administrative, technological, economic, and fortress capital of the human empire. So far, 20% of its surface was covered with water. The rest was a giant ecumenopolis (planet-wide city).

The UWSA Warforce landed on Docking Bay 12 with a loud "thud." The ramp descended and Conrad strode out, heading towards a lift. The lift took him 1km beneath the surface where the doors opened, revealing the military headquarters of Earth. Taking off his helmet, Conrad addressed General Kane Ross.

"Master Specialist, it's good to see that you have come back safe and sound. Is there anything to report?"

"General. Yes, I picked up something along the way while I was rampaging through the camp. Here." Conrad ejected some chip from his armor and handed it to the general.

"Hmmm... Interesting. Let's have a look, shall we? I bet it contains classified Agedai information." The general smiled as we led Conrad to the intelligence section of the base.

When they had finally reached, General Ross passed the chip to an officer who plugged the chip into a computer and accessed it's contents.

"Sir," The officer began,"It's a map of some sort. It shows the locations of some unknown objects scattered throughout the Milky Way."

"Hmmm... This chip is not very useful. I don't think that the objects will have any impact on the war," The general stroked his chin.

"General. I suggest keeping this chip. It's contents could have further use in the future," Conrad said, eyes narrowing.

"Yes, good point, Master Specialist. I will ensure that this chip will not be disposed," The general nodded. "We will investigate those objects by checking records. I don't think that a team should be sent to investigate just yet."

Suddenly, another officer burst into the room.

"General Ross! Radon Station reports multiple inconsistent holospace ruptures have been detected near Univa and they read multiple pings under the orbital defense grid! It is the Agedai! Code Autumn has been declared!"

(Code Autumn was an emergency plan that deals with situations where Agedai forces have become aware or are present at a UWSA colony.)

"This can't be happening! How could they have found Univa?! Master Specialist, can I trust you to lead Squad Bravo Three to battle at Univa?" The general turned to Conrad.

  "Yes sir!"

Turning to the officer, General Ross ordered, "Mobilize all units! Make ready for battle!"

Planet of Univa, Soteros System, Milky Way Galaxy
5 February, 2849 A.D. 1000 hours

The UWSA Armageddon passed the orbital boundary of Univa. Conrad looked down at the planet below him.

Approximately 5 times the size of Earth and having the second-largest population in the human empire, Univa was one of the UWSA's major manufacturing centres. Both civilian and military spacecraft were manufactured there. It was also the training ground of the Marine Corps, Sentinels, and other special forces. If the Agedai managed to successfully invade Univa, nothing would stand between them and Earth.

The Armageddon's landing gear extended as it touched down on the ground of Univa.

Conrad stepped out, followed by the members of his squad and the aircraft supporting them. They were last seen heading towards the site of recent Agedai activity.

...

An ASV (Armed Snow Vehicle) plowed through the landscape, leading a pack of ASVs between a battalion of T887 tanks.

"This is Gold-5 to Beta-9. We're joining Gold-7 and are now en-route to Recon Team Zero's last known position. 5 out." The driver radioed.

Recon Team Zero had gone on a recon mission to check on some Agedai activity near the Vordok Mountains.

"Gold-5! Gold-5! We're under attack!" A plasma bolt slammed into one of the recon scouts.

The other scout tried to run away but was hit in the shoulder by another plasma bolt.

  "Argh!" He cried.

The driver of Gold-5 gasped in shock.

Groaning, the scout crawled a few feet before turning back, just in time to see an Agedai soldier materialize out of nowhere, energy sword raised.

The driver of Gold-5 heard screams. Then silence.

The Agedai soldier grabbed the scout's dead body and grunted, before tossing the body away. Suddenly, a whole army of Agedai deactivated their Active Cloak and materialized, ready for war. Agedai aircraft swooped above them, weapons primed for action.

An air battle ensued. Human soldiers rushed out of their mobile bases and engaged the enemy. The battlefield was filled with chaos. Screams could be heard. Bullets and plasma bolts flew over the battlefield, lighting the sky.

On a high cliff perpendicular to the battlefield, Conrad stood and watched the drama unfold. Behind him were his men and the UWSA reinforcement aircraft.

"This is Squad Bravo 3. If they want war, we'll give 'em war!"

The battle for Univa had started.

Legacy Chronicles: SENTINEL-2224, Chapter 1

Prologue: In the distant past, an technologically-advanced alien race known as the Harbingers built the Shadow Generator. No one knows why they built it, or how they did. In fact, very little was known of the Harbingers. All that was known of them was that they colonized the Milky Way Galaxy, and built a vast empire stretching from one end of the galaxy to the other.

Eons ago, the Harbingers activated the Shadow Generator, thus destroying all sentient life the Milky Way Galaxy. Why they did that, no one knows. Above all, nobody knows how life managed to survive the activation of the weapon.

Now, humanity has already colonized the Milky Way Galaxy. The United World Space Authority (UWSA), military, exploratory, and scientific organization of the United Human Government, was formed shortly before the colonization process. Thousands of worlds have been colonized and many alien races have been discovered. However, a war is being currently fought with the Agedai, an alien race. Due to the Agedai being more technologically advanced, hundreds of world fell and the war seemed lost.

In AD 2801 the creation of the SENTINEL-I program, a project that created specially-trained commandos, changed the situation. Due to the fact that the SENTINEL-I program was a success, the SENTINEL-II program was given the green light ten years after the SENTINEL-I project. However, due to the high cost of creating SENTINEL-II augmented super-soldiers, the project was stopped after a while; but SENTINEL-II soldiers continued to serve in the UWSA army. After the fall of Colossom in 2824, the SENTINEL-III Project was kick-started. Specially augmented super-soldiers were created as a result of the project. Although only 200 SENTINEL-III soldiers were ever created, they had a major impact on the Human-Agedai War. The Agedai especially feared the SENTINEL-IIIs but none as much as a particular SENTINEL-III, SENTINEL-2224. After the SENTINEL-III project was initiated, many other projects attempting to create super-soldiers followed, but none of them had the same effect as the SENTINEL-III project.

...

Planet of Rogus, Waster System, Milky Way Galaxy
2 February, AD 2849, 1900 hours

A lone soldier staggered to his feet and reached down to pick up his helmet. His sharp blue eyes pierced the air and his angular features made him look like an elf. His shaved head reflected back sunlight. He scanned the surroundings and sighed as he saw his fallen comrades. An earlier missile strike had ensured that he was alone. He remembered the thundering sound and impact before losing consciousness. Slipping on his helmet, he then proceeded to slot his MAR-32 assault rifle into his back holster.

Suddenly, a loud roaring filled the air as mortars rained down all around him! The Agedai must have launched a second strike to ensure that there were no survivors. Rolling away from a nearby explosion, the soldier leapt to his feet and threw something shaped like a grenade into the ground. He crouched as a shield formed around him, taking the full brunt of another three missile hits before fizzling out. The soldier then started sprinting away, at the same time grabbing his rifle.

Leaping down a small ledge, the soldier engaged a group of 5 Agedai commandos, slaughtering them all mercilessly within a period of 10 seconds without using his gun.

Whipping out his rifle, he discharged a withering volley of fire at the aliens manning the mortar positions, killing them almost instantly.

Activating the radar function in his Heads-Up Display (HUD) in his helmet, the trooper saw that there was no one in sight. He was alone in an enemy base camp with no human nearby.

All of a sudden, sometime hit him from behind, sending him flying a few meters forward. Grunting, he got up. However, there was no visual of his unknown attacker. Another blow staggered him backwards before he saw the light reflecting off a blade. An energy sword.

Leaping backwards to avoid the stab, the soldier switched on his infrared HUD display, enabling his helmet to detect strong heat signatures and see his assailant's heat-radiating body through his visor. Finally he could at last set eyes upon the Agedai that was attacking him. It would soon die.

Springing upwards, the soldier evaded the sweeping blow that the alien threw. Landing behind the Agedai soldier, the trooper caught the creature's neck in a headlock and with a sickening "Crack!", snapped it.

Three more Agedai arrived at the scene, but the human trooper easily dispatched them. He put a bullet in the first alien's head, impaled the second with his combat knife, and sent his fist thundering deep into the third's head, killing him instantly.

That day, the Bloodhound, an Agedai ship orbiting Rogus, received a transmission from Horow Base.  "Mayday! The devil has attacked our base! Our soldiers are falling like flies by his hand! Argh! (Translated into English) ..." The transmission cut to hash.

Wiping the blood off his knife, the lone soldier walked off into the distance, leaving the smoking remains of what was the Agedai camp.  He was the "devil." He was SENTINEL-2224, most decorated war veteran in the UWSA, SENTINEL-III super-soldier and scourge of the Agedai. He had been unleashed and now no one could stop him.
